Edward Seymour Cornish, founder and first president of the World Future Society and editor of its magazine, The Futurist, died August 14, 2019. He was 91. A longtime Maryland resident (Bethesda and Rockville), Cornish had been living at Olney Assisted Living in Olney, Md., during his battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Last month’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of NASA’s Apollo 11 mission—the “giant leap for mankind” resulting in man’s first steps on the Moon—featured a host of documentaries and reflections on how that mission was accomplished.

The latest United Nations population report projects the world’s population could grow 26% by mid-century, from 7.7 billion now to 9.7 billion by 2050. This latest projection is about 2% lower than the UN’s 2017 projection of 9.9 billion people in 2050, reflecting a slowing overall population growth rate.

The distractions are largely due to noise from co-workers—talking on the phone or on video conference, or even simply passing through a work area.

In 1984, political scientist Philip Tetlock observed at a meeting of the U.S. National Research Council’s Committee on American Soviet Relationship how contradictory many authoritative predictions the participants held on the future of the Cold War. As well, he noted their dismissal of the opinions of equally qualified colleagues on the committee.
